Aimed at companies producing smaller moulds and tools as well as stockholders specialising in supplying blocks and plate up to 1,060 mm long by 680 mm wide by 600 mm high, a new, vertical bandsaw has been introduced by the German manufacturer, KASTO, and is available through its UK subsidiary in Southampton. Unlike other horizontally-acting block and plate saws in the company's range, which have a stationary table and moving saw head for cutting lengths up to 13 metres, the KASTOvertical model has a stationary saw head and two moving tables. They shuttle on four backlash-free linear guides in and out of the working area at 3 m/min in rapid motion. This allows the operator to clamp and unclamp material safely, away from the point of cutting. The tables are set at a convenient height of just over one metre for ergonomic loading and unloading. Stock up to a maximum of two tonnes can be accommodated and is positioned relative to the saw band using a variety of manual measuring stops equipped with a vernier scale or a hand wheel and digital readout. The latter stop may optionally be positioned electrically. The machine is said to be quiet and vibration-free in operation as a result of the sturdy fabricated bed, leading to fast cycle times, accurate cutting and long blade life, even when sawing high-grade materials. Blade length and thickness are 5.45 metres and 1.3 mm respectively, with a choice of two band widths - 41 or 54 mm. The frequency controlled blade drive, rated at 4 kW (optionally 7.5 kW), allows band speeds to be selected in the range 17 to 110 m/min to ensure optimum conditions for cutting a wide variety of metals. If aluminium and light alloys are to be cut, however, a drive with cutting speeds from 50 to 500 m/min can be specified. Actuated by a servo-driven ballscrew at infinitely variable speeds from 1 to 250 mm/min, the tables perform the feed motion. KASTO's menu-driven CompactControl with LCD display provides an efficient operator interface with soft keys. The operator simply enters the cut length, blade speed, feed rate and notching depth if appropriate before pressing the start button. Alternatively, cutting parameters can be selected from 12 resident programs pre-entered to suit different material groups, in which case the material height is gauged automatically and allowed for so that optimum cutting performance is attained. Status and any errors messages are displayed in clear text with the date and time. The blade is guided through preloaded, carbide slideways with a wear-free roller at the back for high precision cutting. The upper blade guide height can be adjusted hydraulically up to 135 mm above the table and may be equipped with a pressure roller for cutting thin sheets or sheet stacks.
