Whereas at last year’s Autosport International, KASTO exhibited its automated storage and retrieval systems for long stock, sheet metal and other materials, at the 2009 show (8th / 9th January, NEC) the company will present its latest Workshop range of sawing machines. The German manufacturer is best known for manufacturing high-end, automated sawing and storage equipment. However, the UK subsidiary, based in Milton Keynes, is keen to emphasise that it also offers a comprehensive range of affordable bandsaws, circular saws and even power hacksaws from KASTO. Staff will be on hand to discuss the cutting method best suited to a company in the autosport sector for any given application. Circular saws have the best cutting performance due to the higher feed per tooth, and are generally more compact. The KASTOdisc series, for example, has a downstroking saw blade of 350 mm maximum diameter. Feed is either by a manually operated lever or is power-operated via a hydraulic cylinder or a pneumatic-hydraulic pressure transformer. In KASTO’s view, a circular saw should have at least two cutting speeds, such as 18 / 36 m/min for solids in the larger diameter range up to 100 mm, or 36 / 72 m/min for profiles and non-ferrous metals. The ability to mitre cut at up to 45 degrees left or 60 degrees right is also a characteristic of the KASTOdisc machine.
These bandsaws are equipped with stepped or infinitely variable cutting speeds from 20 to 110 m/min. The higher cutting speed range is just one factor indicating the increased capability of the small bandsaw over the circular saw. In automatic version, the material is fed by servomotor via a ballscrew, leading to high precision even in small batch manufacture. For larger batch sizes, the machine is sufficiently rigid to be used with carbide blades instead of HSS. Virtually any material including hardened steels and high tensile alloys may be sawn. The hacksaw is really only suitable for occasional use, in a test facility for example, but nevertheless is available as an option. Normally the choice will be between a circular saw and a bandsaw. KASTO in the UK operates a dealer / resale scheme and welcomes potential resellers to visit the stand for discussions.
