Two new machining centres have been introduced by the Italian manufacturer, FOM Industrie, designed to perform complex, high accuracy milling, drilling and tapping operations on three sides of aluminium or PVC extrusion. Available through sole UK agent, Kasto, they are intended for economical production of one-off parts to medium batches in the window and door fabrication sectors. The fully guarded structure consists of a machine bed with an extended X-axis slideway along which the spindle head travels. Longitudinal travel is 4,270 mm on the DALI 40 and 7,270 mm on the DALI 70, while Y- and Z-axes on both machines are 1,040 mm and 430 mm respectively. Rapid traverse of 100 m/min minimises non-cutting time. Axis drive in X is a via a helical rack and pinion - ballscrews in the other axes - brushless digital servomotors from Yaskawa ensuring rapid positioning. The 4 kW / 12,000 rpm, constant-torque electrospindle can be provided with a -15 deg / +195 deg B-axis for machining on three faces of an extrusion. Workpiece clamping is provided by four pneumatic vices (optionally more). A Windows interface in the control enables planning of the machining operations as well as program generation. Features include display of the profile shape, simulation of the machining operations in 2D or 3D, on-screen display listing required tooling for the job, and automatic selection of optimal vice positioning
